What’s wrong with Twitter? or Why bosses don’t Tweet?

Twitter on Laptop

In our industry Twitter is on everyone’s lips. Why? Because its potential as a networking and relationship building tool is huge.

You can struggle to get the head of a think tank to answer your emails or letters, but he or she may be quite happy to share tweets with you on a regular basis. And once the relationship is built, the emails, letters and invitations to lunch suddenly get answered.

However, I am often surprised by the fear that Twitter can instil in some – particularly in CEOs.  Men and women who have had to stand in a presentation hall of 400 angry customers to explain a product development mishap, or will happily stand their ground against a Paxman style journalist, can be at a loss when putting 140 characters together and are nervous of saying the wrong thing.

Some highly publicised, ill-thought out Tweets are often the cause of this fear and it is true – as with any public communication – a healthy dose of respect is required. But you simply need to apply the same guidelines that you would in most other channels.

The only thing I would suggest is that at time of crisis; get your PR team or agency to check your Tweets before you post them up to ensure they hit the right note.

Oh and possibly one more rule, if there’s a G&T in your hand…step away from the keyboard.

It’s my job to look strategically at our clients’ goals for their brand and then apply my knowledge of PR, the media and online communities to make sure that we deliver. The part of my job that I enjoy most is being able to provide a fresh perspective for our clients – and uncovering the best way to raise the profile of their brand. I also love keeping up to date with the ever changing nature of PR.

Before setting up the business, I worked both in-house and agency-side doing PR in the education and telecoms sectors. I split my time between France and the UK and so I can often be found at airports smuggling cheddar cheese into the land of camembert.
