Raising Your Twitter Profile

I have been advising our clients a lot recently on raising their Twitter profiles. I thought I would share some of the key pointers here too.

Building a following

  • Join relevant Linked In Groups as this will raise the profile of your tweets and give you more sources of material to write about
  • Use relevant hash tags for your sector (eg for me these are #pr and #socialpr). Create your own hash tags for conferences that your company runs and tell attendees what the hash tags are in advance of the conference in their confirmation emails and via tweets. Do this again at the start of the conference and tweet yourself to generate a buzz about the conference and increase your following.
  • Add your Twitter name to email signatures, at the end of sales presentations, at the end of press releases etc.
  • Follow all institutions you want to target or that you wish to follow you.
  • Say thanks for following/retweeting to begin with as it is polite, but do it privately (direct messages). Follow back if the person is relevant. You can keep a track of the people you really need to read by dividing all your ‘follows’ into seperate lists. Your tweeting platform will allow you to do this.
  • Aim to keep the number of people you follow below the number of people that follow you as over following is a tactic used by the less scrupulous Twitter users.
  • Look at who the influencers are following and start to follow some of the key people on their list
  • Learn from the best – who is getting the sort of following you are looking to build. Examine how they are tweeting and see if you could employ some of their tricks.
  • Do not retweet too much. It is good to retweet as it helps develop links in the community but too much and you lose your personality and just become a news service.
  • Take advantage of your Twitter programme to follow key words in separate columns (eg #Gove). This will help you see who would be good to follow by who is commenting on these issues
